New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
The New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (NJAND) is an affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. NJAND represents over 2300 members serving New Jersey through the promotion of optimal nutrition, health and well being. Our members provide nutrition services in many settings including private practice, school systems, public health agencies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, education, research, business, supermarkets, and industry. Registered Dietitian/Nutritionists (RDN) and Dietetic Technicians, Registered (DTR) serve as members of the health care team and provide quality, evidence-based nutrition care for individuals and groups at all stages of the life span and in all conditions of health and disease.

This month the NJAND is honored to shine a spotlight on Dr. Mavis Faulknor, MS, RDN, MSN, FHNP, CDE! We are privileged to call her a colleague and proud of her contributions to health and wellness.
Dr. Faulknor earned her undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Food Science with an international focus between University of Technology, Jamaica; New York University, and City University of New York -Hunter College, where she completed a Master's of Science in Nutrition at the City University of New York -Hunter College; she also completed a Master of Science in Nursing and an approved Dietetic Internship Program, at the University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ), now Rutgers University. She went on to earn a doctorate in Nursing at the University of Buffalo. After completion of her doctoral studies, Dr. Faulknor practiced as a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner at the County of Hudson, Meadowview Psychiatric Hospital, and Department of Health and Human Services in Secaucus, New Jersey.
Dr. Faulknor is a Board Certified Family Health Nurse Practitioner (FHNP-BC), Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), Licensed Teacher of Health Occupations, and founder of Sivam Diabetes Nutrition, and Family Healthcare LLC. which will begin to provide healthcare services to patients with diabetes mellitus and those at risk for the development of diabetes mellitus in East Orange, New Jersey. She is a strong advocate that "All students can learn". She is a national and international educator, and has taught at Dublin City University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, in the first graduate program for the training of Nurse Practitioners in the Middle East.
She has received many Awards including the 2003 Healthy Hero Award for "Improving the Lives of others and leaving the community and world better," by the AMERIGROUP Foundation and the National League of Nursing (NLN) Recognition award in 2015. Her most recent award was the Leadership Newark Award in 2018. Other notable achievements include helping to pioneer the use of a Mobile Van in the City of Newark and surrounding service areas to provide supplemental food and nutrition to the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) participants who lacked access to benefits and services because of transportation issues..
Dr. Faulknor is currently employed with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, International Center for Public Health, Global Tuberculosis Center, Waymon C. Lattimore Practice. She will continue to focus her research, educational, and clinical activities on the bi-directional relationship between diabetes mellitus and tuberculosis, with clinical interventions for patients with diabetes and those at risk for developing diabetes mellitus.
